Many models of random curves in two-dimensional statistical mechanics exhibit a competition between a locally Brownian nature and a global area constraint, characteristic of the KPZ universality class. Hallmarks of this class are the $\frac 13$--$\frac 23$ exponents of its spatial and temporal fluctuations, and the resulting non-Gaussian limit laws that arise. We discuss how this behavior arises...
