Here in Statistics we are making our words into actions on addressing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) issues. As a department, we've been working as a whole and in small groups led by students, faculty, and staff to educate, discuss, and plan actions for our future:
-On June 10, we had an all-department online forum to discuss the recent events around racism and action plans.
-On June 12, we posted a statement here and on our Facebook page in support of Black Lives Matter.
-We created a department-wide Slack channel to facilitate working groups on issues such as: Departmental climate and culture, the relationship between Campus and the UC police department, undergraduate and graduate program diversity, and anti-racism and DEI curriculum.
-We created a DEI Committee, with representation from faculty, staff, and students. This committee is partnering with the working groups on an action plan for DEI and a DEI webpage.
-Our Department Manager is working with the entire staff on a Mission and Values statement that incorporates the viewpoints and experiences of our diverse staff.
-Faculty, staff, and (current and incoming) students have been participating in a weekly summer anti-racism reading group.
We take seriously the commitment to making the world a better and more equitable place, starting with our own home in Statistics.
