CLUSTER COURSE CRITERIA

The applied cluster is a chance to learn about areas in which Statistics can be applied, and to learn specialized techniques not taught in the Statistics Department. You need to design your own Applied Cluster. The courses should have a unifying theme. Picking your own applied cluster is a valuable exercise that gives you a chance to explore and refine your interests and to develop a coherent course of study. A pre-approved list has been provided below. However, it is not exhaustive. Clusters may consist of courses from more than one department, but at least two must be approved courses from the same department. If students would like to use a course that is not on the list or select three courses from three different departments, the Head Undergraduate Faculty Adviser must approve the proposed cluster. Cluster courses should meet the following criteria:

Generally,

a. Courses must be upper division courses and at least 3 units.
b. Courses in the biological and physical sciences, Chemistry and Engineering are often acceptable.
c. Courses in social sciences must be quantitative.
d. Courses with statistics prerequisites are often acceptable.
e. Courses that are similar to courses offered in the Statistics department are not acceptable.
f. Courses that primarily teach how to use a particular software package are not acceptable.
g. Courses that focus on the use of spreadsheet software (e.g. UGBA 104) are not acceptable.
h. Courses should be taken in the “home” department. For instance, economics classes should be taken in the economics or business department.
i. Seminars and Special topics courses require approval by the Head Undergraduate Faculty Advisor.
j. If an approved cluster course has a credit restriction with another approved course, both cannot be used for the applied cluster (refer to the Berkeley Academic Guide for credit restrictions, click on “read more” under the course description).

*NOTES:

  1. Only one course may be selected from ECON 136, ENGIN 120 and UGBA 103.
  2. If Math 110 or H110 has been used to satisfy math prerequisite requirement, course cannot be used for applied cluster.
  3. Math 170 cannot be combined with either IEOR 160 or IEOR 162.
  4. Students may use UGBA 102A and/or UGBA 102B for their cluster, but may NOT use UC Berkeley Extension's XB102A nor XB102B since, effective Spring 2014, the Haas School of Business no longer deems them equivalent (see http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/ugbacourses.html).
  5. Due to overlap of course content, only one course from Stat 154, CS, 182, CS 189 and IEOR 142 can be used to satisfy Statistics major requirements.

REQUESTING APPROVAL OF COURSES NOT ON THIS LIST OR A CLUSTER IN THREE DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS

To request approval of a course not currently on this list or a cluster in three different departments, see the Head Undergraduate Faculty Advisor, Prof. Ani Adhikari, during Faculty Advising Drop-In Hours. All proposed courses must still meet the general cluster course criteria above and must fit thematically in with the rest of your cluster. Bring with you the following information for courses not on the list:

1) For courses not on the list:

• Course name
• Units
• Course description, including prerequisites
• Syllabus and textbook information (if available)
• Any other supporting documentation (if available), such as sample assignments or exams

If selecting three courses in three different departments from the list, provide a short one-paragraph statement on how these courses present a unifying theme.

2) Copy of your Statistics Major Worksheet (obtain from Staff Advisor if you do not have a copy) with your current and newly proposed Applied Cluster Courses listed.

3) An updated Program Plan
