Two Sigma PhD Fellowship recipients for 2023-24

Two Sigma is generously sponsoring a PhD fellowship for the academic year 2023-24. This competitive fellowship provides payment of tuition and fees as well as a generous living stipend for one academic semester or the entire academic year, depending on the number of fellowship recipients.  

Congratulations to Saptarshi Chabraborty and Daniel Raban who have been honored with a one-semester Two Sigma Fellowship for the 2023-24 academic school year.

Saptarshi Chakraborty is a rising fourth-year Ph.D. student at the Department of Statistics, University of California, Berkeley, where, he is advised by Prof. Peter Bartlett. Before joining Berkeley, he completed his Master's (M.Stat) in 2020 and Bachelor's (B. Stat (Hons.)) degrees in Statistics in 2018 from Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, both in first division with distinction. Prior to that, he spent his childhood years studying at the prestigious Hindu School, Kolkata. He is broadly interested in machine learning with particular emphasis on deep learning theory, clustering, statistical learning theory, dimensionality reduction, and optimal transport. Beyond academia, he loves spending his free time reading Bengali novels and attempting to cook Awadhi dishes.

Daniel Raban is a third year Ph.D. student in the Statistics department at UC Berkeley, advised by Professor Steve Evans. He received a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from UC Berkeley and a Master's degree in Mathematics from UCLA. He is interested in probability theory and theoretical statistics, with specific interests in ergodic theory, empirical processes, measure theory, and optimal transport. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, writing fiction, and analyzing video game music.
