Philip Stark and Peter Shearer (UCSD) have been investigating the global risk of big earthquakes, a topic of great interest in light of the number of big earthquakes in recent years. Their analysis found no evidence that the risk has increased lately, and no viable physical theory that would cause the risk to increase. They conclude that the global risk is not on the rise.
