We will begin discussing a theorem of Haglund and Wise which states that the combination of two virtually special word-hyperbolic cube complexes along an isometrically immersed quasi-convex malnormal subcomplex is also virtually special. We’ll discuss canonical completions and retracts for isometric immersions into special cube complexes.
