2019 Statistics Commencement
Yesterday, Tuesday, May 21, 2019, was our annual Statistics Department commencement ceremony. This year the Statistics Department was back in Wheeler Auditorium and we had a packed house with family, friends, and 133 undergrads, 23 Master's, & 13 PhDs. More graduates than ever before! This year's commencement speaker was Amanda Cox, Data Editor of the New York Times. She gave a rousing commencement address encouraging our graduates to be the ones in their community who interpret the unknown from the vast amounts of data out in the world and she charged them to use their ability to understand and decipher data for the betterment of their community. Following her address, awards were received, the PhDs were hooded, and graduates traversed the stage to receive their scrolls while friends & family cheered and countless photos were taken. To conclude the day's ceremony department chair, Professor Deb Nolan, asked the graduates to stand, face the audience, and move there tassels from right to left. It's a moving tradition which always makes those in attendance understand that our graduates are moving on to a new phase in their life's journey. Congratulations to all of our 2019 Statistics Graduates!
