If you would like to participate in this year's Statistics Department Commencement Ceremony, you must submit the Statistics Commencement Registration Form (must be logged into Berkeley account) by April 4, 2024.

Please note that the Statistics Department Commencement Ceremony is separate from the campus-wide Commencement Ceremony. For more information regarding the general campus-wide Commencement, please visit their website.

Eligibility for Participation

All Statistics and Biostatistics students graduating Fall 2023-Fall 2024 are eligible to participate in the Statistics Commencement Ceremony. This includes those who graduated in Fall 2023 and those who intend to graduate in Spring, Summer, or Fall 2024.

Tickets to the Ceremony

Tickets sales are on sale now for $12 each. CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE

All guests must have a ticket for entrance into the ceremony. If you are a graduating student participating in the ceremony, you do not need a ticket for yourself but will need to be in cap and gown.

The department will provide a ticket for children 2 or under if you requested it when you completed the registration form and that ticket will not count against your 2 complimentary tickets.

Tickets are for general admission (no assigned seating).

Accessibility

The Statistics Department wants to make the commencement as accessible as possible to you and your guests. If you or friends/family members who are attending the commencement require accommodations for a disability (for example, sign language interpreting, real-time captioning, wheelchair space, etc.), please be sure to indicate this on the Commencement Registration Form.

International Students: Inviting Relatives and Friends

If you wish to invite international guests to come to the U.S. for your commencement, email your Student Services Program Advisor to obtain a verification letter.  Be sure to include the family member name(s) and relationship(s) to you.  For more information, please visit the Berkeley International Office. Please note that you as the graduating student would provide the invitation letter and the Statistics Department would only provide supporting documentation to verify the date and time of the ceremony and to confirm your participation in it.

Caps and gowns are available for graduates to purchase at the Official Cal Student Store (2495 Bancroft Way) and in the Graduation Department at Fall Rush (2470 Bancroft Way). You can also purchase them online at the

Commencement Speaker: Kate Crawford

Kate CrawfordKate Crawford is an internationally leading scholar of artificial intelligence and its impacts. She is a research professor at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, a senior principal researcher at Microsoft Research in New York, and was the inaugural Visiting Chair in AI and Justice at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. Her research has appeared in venues such as Nature and Science, Technology & Human Values, and she has advised policymakers in the United Nations, the White House, and the European Parliament. Her book Atlas of AI: Power, Politics, and the Planetary Costs of Artificial Intelligence has won multiple awards including the Sally Hacker Prize, is translated into more than ten languages, and was named one of the books of the year by both New Scientist and The Financial Times. Kate is a joint winner of the Ayrton Prize from the British Society for the History of Science.

In addition to her academic research, Kate produces art installations and visual investigations which have been shown in more than a hundred museums and biennales around the world. Her project Anatomy of an AI System with Vladan Joler is currently exhibited at the MoMA in New York (2022-2024) and is in the museum's permanent collection, as well as the permanent collections of the V&A in London, the Ars Electronica Center, and the Design Museum in London. It was also given the Design of the Year Award. Their new project, Calculating Empires: A Genealogy of Power and Technology premiered at Fondazione Prada in Milan, and was next exhibited at the KW Institute in Berlin in 2024. 

Kate leads the Knowing Machines Project, a transatlantic research collaboration of scientists, artists, and legal scholars that investigates training data. She was named on the TIME100 list in 2023 as one of the most influential people in AI. You can read her latest publication in Nature here
