Congratulations to our 2018 Graduates

Congratulations to our 2018 Graduates

This year's commencement was a wonderful celebration for all those who participated, whether it was students, parents, faculty or staff. We had more students participate than even before in our graduation ceremony which took place at Zellerbach Playhouse on Monday, May 14th, 2018. As families and friends gathered in the theater for the processional, our graduates anxiously awaited the moment when 'Pop and Circumstance' would begin so they could make their way across the stage to begin the ceremony. The Statistics Department Chair Deborah Nolan opened the event and gave a wonderful introduction for our commencement speaker, human rights activist and author of 'When We Rise: My Life in the Movement' Cleve Jones. Due to a strike on-campus Mr. Jones chose to honor the workers' request and not attend our commencement. Instead he sent a video message to our graduates encouraging them to be engaged in their community and to use their skills to make a meaningful impact in their world. After his message, awards were handed out, PhDs got hooded, Master's and Undergraduates received their scrolls, and the ceremony came to an end. Once the graduates processed out of the Zellerbach Playhouse they reunited with family and friends, now as UC Berkeley grads. They enjoyed refreshments and photo opportunities with their fellow graduates and faculty members of the Statistics Department. We would like to congratulate all the 2018 UC Berkeley Statistics graduates, both those who joined us at commencement and those who could not attend. We are excited to see and hear about the contributions you will make with the skills you learned & developed during your time at UC Berkeley.
