Yu and Barter publish online book titled "Veridical Data Science: The Practice of Responsible Data Analysis and Decision Making"
Distinguished Professor Bin Yu and Ph.D. alum Rebecca L. Barter have published an online book titled "Veridical Data Science: The Practice of Responsible Data Analysis and Decision Making."
This is a pre-release of the Open Access web version of Veridical Data Science. MIT Press will publish a print version of this book in late 2024.
Veridical Data Science (VDS) demonstrates how to use the principles of predictability, computability, and stability (PCS) to create and evaluate trustworthy data-driven results by conducting stress tests at every stage of the data science life cycle (DSLC), from problem formulation and data cleaning to modeling and the communication of results.
Yu is the Class of 1936 Second Chair in the College of Letters and Science and Chancellor's Distinguished Professor, Departments of Statistics and Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences, and Center for Computational Biology at the UC Berkeley.
"I hope many of you find it a useful resource for your classes as one of your textbooks or as supplementary reading for your students," said Yu in an email to colleagues.
Barter '19 is a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Utah. Advised by Yu, her dissertation was titled "Visualization, Prediction, and Causal Inference: Applications in Healthcare."
